Socktoberfest Sockspiration #13: Grin and Bear It

It’s Halloween! And I don’t have a costume. I’m leaning towards going as the Liberal leadership race, which means that once again I’ve chosen a costume that can’t be translated into “slutty blank.” You can’t go as a slutty Liberal leadership race (unless [[Peter MacKay]] crosses the floor, am I right?).

My socktography has been slacking these past few days due to midterms and other projects, and I apologize. To make up for it, here are the socks I’m wearing today:

Eve’s secrets to a great life #47: hiding your hot sauce

Hiding your Hot SauceHoo boy! That last post was a downer. I didn’t want that one to be up for so long, considering that I was no longer feeling all that rotten after about 5 minutes of maxin’ and relaxin’. It was all, Quelle dommage! to Allons’y acheter quelques prostituées!

Speaking of les prostituées, PingMag recently published a short piece entitled The Strange World of Women’s Private Time. It’s actually quite interesting, and maybe a bit inspiring (at least in terms of the cute clothes). But if you don’t want to open that page because you think Betty in IT is watching your internet habits, you can go check out this hilarious crocheted “hot sauce” holder instead. It’s for holding your… ahem. Hot sauce. It looks like a mouse who had an anvil dropped on his head, and now he has a lump of Loony Tunes proportions. Seeing as it’s just two tubes, a sash and a bit of frill (now doesn’t that sound like a movie you’d keep behind the counter), it’s easily replicable in knitted form. I’m sure you can increase or decrease the length of the lump to accomodate a different size… hot sauce bottle. And if you’re needing to increase the girth (because you have a very thick… er… hot sauce bottle), just knit at a larger gauge.

Now remember, this is for hot sauce only. Don’t you girls get any ideas. It’s for HOT. SAUCE.

Make yourselves cozy, dearies, I have a story to tell!

Hilarious crying anime girlI am having the worst day.

It is hard for me to type because my arms are so weak. I stopped off at the grocers this morning and I decided to get a nice big box so I could later turn it into a light box with lots of room. But was that a good idea? It sure wasn’t. By the time I was halfway home it had crumbled into an unwieldy mess and there I was, in front of a construction site, scrambling and screeching for the box to stay together like I was in the middle of an episode of I Love Lucy.

I kept telling myself, Eve, there is cranberry juice in there, and delicious curry paste, and cream of wheat that you can eat when you get home. And then the box started to lose its bottom and I put it on the ground and just stood there, looking at the box, wondering how on earth I was ever going to make it to my doorstep.

Socktoberfest Sockspiration #12: MVB (Most Valuable Bear)

These are my Paddington slippers. They’re not technically a sock, but I decided to post them anyway. I find them hilarious, especially when worn with jeans. I like to pretend I’m an urban bear with glamorous friends (Sister Berenstain is such a tramp but we’re still tight) and a successful job as a stockbroker. My bearness is never an issue — not even to the most superstitious of my colleagues — and I’ve only ever been blamed once for a bear market. (In all fairness I did tell all my friends to sell Nortel, but the alleged paw prints on all their accounting documents were never successfully traced back to me.) I’m on the go all the time, and I’m never without my Sidekick. There’s too much honey to eat, and not enough time in the day to eat it in.

Four More Hats!

Pretty in Pink Progress ThermometerI am so blown away by Rhonda. She’s knit FOUR MORE HATS for the ‘Circle of Love’ hat project and my Pretty In Pink contest. That brings us up to 12 entries, which is 24% of the goal! Way to go Rhonda!

Now we just need 38 more to get to 50. I’ve been crazy bogged down with midterms and grant applications and grad school applications and GRE studying and general insanity, so I haven’t even had time to THINK about another hat. But don’t you worry my pretties, I’m starting today on a pretty little stockinette number using my new fantastic continental stylez, because I don’t have time to learn how to purl with the yarn in my left hand. THAT’S how crazy busy I am.

If you’re as busy as I am and don’t have time to knit, remember that I’ll be extending the Pretty In Pink deadline until I get 50 entries. But don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security! Get your entries in now!

I’m not one for dracophilia, but I like the motif on these socks. I used to wear them to exams, as they are red and I am superstitious. I also throw salt over my shoulder at every opportunity, so watch out when I’m cooking!

These are my favourite knee-highs. I like to wear them under jeans with a reserved sweater, so when I’m just walking around it’s like “oh hey, there’s Eve, she’s looking very reserved today” but then I get on my bike and roll up my pant legs and they’re like, “oh now I see where her wackiness has been stored, that makes more sense.”

I wanted to show these because I really like the colour combination. I would never have thought to combine these colours like this, so when I saw them I was immediately inspired to mimic the pattern. And I will; I just have to find the yarn.

Can’t find what you want on eBay?

DDR to the max!

I’ve been using eBay for a few years now, and it’s really great for finding things like yarn, antiques, patterns, etc. Lately I’ve been looking for a Playstation 2 (I’m addicted to [[Dance Dance Revolution]] and I can’t just go over to my friend’s house every day and steal her TV for an hour), and sometimes it doesn’t feel like it’s worth it to watch all these auctions because they all top out at $110, and at that price I might as well buy it new. But I’ve found a trick, and I want to share it.

Misspelled Auctions and Fat Fingers are both websites that search for common misspellings of words on eBay. For example, using these sites I’ve discovered that lots of people apparently think it’s spelled “Playstaion.” Because less people are going to find those auctions (because unlike Google, eBay only finds the exact word you’re searching for) those auctions are less popular and tend to go for a lower price. And I get a “Playstaion 2″ for $80! Now, whenever I want to buy something I search on eBay and then back that up with a misspelling search. I’ve also got misspellings for “Herc’s Adventures” running as a favourite search, so whenever a correct or misspelling is posted, I’m notified immediately via email.

Here’s another tip I found while searching for eBay hacks: Lastminute Auction is a search engine for cheap, last minute deals. It confines your search to auctions ending within the hour, and under a buck. I’ve seen some really neat knitting patterns show up on this site.

These are two socks for which I couldn’t find the mates, so you get two for the price of one post. I know the other turtle sock is around here somewhere.
