I haven’t actually blogged about my own knitting in a while, so I thought I’d take the time to show you folks what I’ve been up to the past few weeks.

This is the back of the baby jacket I was talking about a short time ago. Since I took this picture this afternoon, I’m almost up to the shoulders! Another pattern repeat and I can put it on a holder and start the fronts.

Cabled Baby Jacket

The tweed is white/grey/black, so when I showed the beau my new yarn he thought I had accidentally dropped it in some lint. It’s looking fine knit up, but next time I’ll be sure to go for colourful tweed to ensure it doesn’t have that rolled-in-the-sandpit look.

Saturday, Pattern Day #3

If you are knitting or have already knit a pattern that I’m talking about, leave me a comment and I’ll update my post with a link to your version. If you’ve written up a pattern and you want me to link to it, send me an email or leave me a comment and I’ll post it! It makes the list longer and my job easier. Here are this week’s patterns:

  • Fresh off the presses: Spring Cable Socks. With seed stitch! Yay!
  • Oh, how we torture our children.
  • Coachella (after the place, not the music festival) is a new knitty pattern, and it’s such a cool top! It’s so not me usually, but it’s just so stylish, how can you resist? (UPDATE: Example here!).
  • I also like Grrr.
  • EXTERMIKNIT! EXTERMIKNIT! A Dalek knitting pattern! I found this pattern when an example was posted here.

This week, I also have some crochet patterns.

DeStash is closing!

I’m so upset. I’ve been lurking on the DeStash blog since I found out about it and I’ve even bought something through it. A gaping void has been torn in the knlogosphere!

I believe this will cause a power vacuum, and I see a piece of specific software taking its place that forces stronger posting standards and perhaps PayPal support. Maybe Ravelry can fill the gap?

Side note on Ravelry in which I eat my hat: Looks like hype is actually making Ravelry popular, which I had not expected. I thought that duplication would be a problem for blog owners and that people would get tired of the system after a while (I’ve seen it in the knitblog community before), but I was wrong. A few well-placed raves have gotten the knit community buzzing. I really like their needle-tracker, although it could be a bit faster. Remember Ravelry: ease of use first, extra functions second. Three whole clicks! And waiting between! Do I really need to comment on my needles?

The owner of this photostream is also the owner of a yarn shop; I’ve been having fun looking through all his pictures! These especially:

Baby Blanket

Cute and easy! Just a bunch of squares joined by garter stitch. I’d love to knit this sort of thing for a baby, although maybe I’d replace the cable pattern with something else. I love the diamond, but I’m afraid of bobbles!

Dresses

The dress on the right is my favourite despite the scandalous lack of coverage around the mid-area.

What’s the point of sleeping if you can’t freak out an unsuspecting roommate / family member? I made a wacky pillow like this once, but I think it was supposed to be a [[macrophage]] or the [[Krebs cycle]] or something. I was (and is) a HUGE NERD.

Blood Splatter Blood Splatter

More fake death at Lego Suicides. LOL! and RIP.

David Suzuki

I’ve decided to name all the recycled yarn I have, because it’s annoying always having to say “some green cotton stuff” instead of “mystical mountain breeze” or something.

David SuzukiDavid Suzuki is the world’s coolest / hottest* environmentalist, so I’m naming this first yarn after him. It’s the colour of the earth, for one. It also looks a lot like Noro and he’s Japanese, so I think it fits. I’m not sure how happy he’d be that it’s 85% petroleum-based, but I think he’d forgive me, seeing as I am recycling the yarn. All those Owl magazines have had an effect on me after all.

Stats!

Fibre content: 85% acrylic, 15% wool
Care instructions: machine wash cold.
Purchased at: Value Village
Price: $4
Weight: I should buy a scale so I can measure how heavy it is.
Plans for the yarn: I’d like to make a few striped scarves with it, along the same vein as the scarf by brooklyntweed. A few garter stitch scarves could also be really nice. The yarn is very similar to Noro, so any pattern meant for Noro could fit here.

3-hour sweaterSo here’s why I love blogs: because the people who run them are awesome and creative. And awesome. Par example.

  • I blogged about the 3-hour sweater a little while ago*, and from seeing all sorts of versions all over the place, I think I really want to try it out. There’s a really cute one at The Fabled Needle. I love her interpretation; it shows that the pattern is a great base, all ready for hipness modification (it is 70 years old, after all).
  • Thermal is a bit more modern, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be played with. Not only did Winnie run out of yarn and brilliantly dye the sweater to cover up the colour change, she also took a really neat picture of the finished product.

Side note: My KnitPicks order came!!!! But I’m in Toronto for a reunion, so I have to wait until Tuesday to hug my new yarn and needles. Maybe I can call the beau and ask him to put them on the phone so I can listen to them purr.

* oh wait, no I didn’t. Ok, well I’ve blogged about it now. So if this post were from the future, I would not be a liar.

KnitPicks is having a yarn sale, making certain impossibly inexpensive yarn even more impossibly inexpensive. I just bought a whole bunch of yarn there so I can’t justify buying more, but you can buy some in my stead. Yay!
