Categories: Saturday Pattern Day

Well, we’ve done it! Saturday, Pattern Day has been around for a whole year. Here’s the very first one I posted on June 2nd, 2007. Boy, does time fly! To celebrate 364 days of SDPD, I’m posting a special Double Digest. Think you can handle it?!

If you are knitting or have already knit a pattern that I’m talking about, leave me a comment and I’ll update my post with a link to your version. If you’ve written up a pattern and you want me to link to it, send me an email or leave me a comment and I’ll post it! It makes the list longer and my job easier.

Forties Flared Dress

Here’s a gorgeous Forties Flared Dress via Craft.

The pattern for the dress is here. It’s the Evening Dress with a “Cowl” Neck Line (Fig. 157). It’s amazing how different the drawing looks from the finished project! I just can’t get over how incredible it is. I wish I had the patience to sew!

Tsumami Kanzashi Tutorials

I’ve fallen in love with Kanzashi. Here’s what Wikipedia says about them:

Kanzashi are created by Japanese artisans from squares of silk by a technique known as tsumami. Each square is multiply folded with the aid of pincers and cut into a single petal. These are attached to backings of metal to create whole flowers, or attached to silken threads to create strings of blossoms…. Geisha wear different hana kanzashi according to the month, or public holiday. In the summer months (June to September), jade ornaments with white or silver themes are worn. During the winter months (October to May), tortoiseshell and coral kanzashi are worn.

Here are some beautiful Kanzashi I’ve found on the web:

Saturday, Pattern Day #38

Before we get to the patterns, I’d like to share something I’ve been musing about. I’m considering changing the format of these pattern posts slightly, to include little images of each pattern (if they’re available) so you can see a preview before clicking over to them. This would involve slightly more work on my part, but I think I can manage it. What do you guys think? Would you appreciate seeing thumbnails of each pattern, or could you care less?

If you are knitting or have already knit a pattern that I’m talking about, leave me a comment and I’ll update my post with a link to your version. If you’ve written up a pattern and you want me to link to it, send me an email or leave me a comment and I’ll post it! It makes the list longer and my job easier.

  • It’s crochet so it might not belong on this list, but I don’t care. I love this frilly coin purse!
  • I also like the Shalom Cardigan. I would prefer it with a cap sleeve, but that’s easy to modify.
  • I love seeing patterns with real structural ingenuity, and Leethal’s Short-Rows Wavy Hat has that in spades.
  • Have you been looking around for a one of those Bowtie Scarves that everyone’s been knitting? Well here’s a pattern to knit your very own Bowtie Scarf. Example here. There’s also another version of this at Drops.
  • This bright and shiny sweater is based on the famous Anthropologie cardigan, and it is mega-cute.
  • Here’s a recipe for the sassymetrical cardigan.
  • I must have randomly come across this link for free Rowan patterns at the same time as the big shots, because a few days after I saved these links to my Pattern Day Repository the web exploded over them. I need to start posting these links faster so I’m not longer being scooped! Here are my favourites: Crystal, Pippa, Navaho, Soldier, Gentry Cushion, Minx, Cable Sweater, Chrissie, Hardy, Ralph, and a Fitted Zipped Jacket.
  • I can’t remember if I’ve blogged these Love Heart Socks before, so here they are again.
  • Lurema and Scarfina are two new Berroco patterns based on the Ogee Leaf Lace stitch.
  • This Smocked Top would be quite elegant for summer.
  • Here’s a lace beret pattern for those of you who are not all bereted out yet.
  • Here’s a crochet shark toy, or Haifisch in German. Example here.
  • I think I’ve seen something very similar to this Lace Capelet before. Example here.
  • Here’s a Makeup Bag pattern with a bonus stethoscope warmer, for some reason.

Twist-It-Up Bandeau Top

I love this top, and it looks insanely easy! I’m not much of a tube top sorta gal, but I am so tempted to try this. I even have some fabric lying around that would be perfect. The only embarrassment? We usually use it to wrap presents on Christmas. Hermmm, maybe I should find something with a less lame history. Found via CRAFT!

Open-Contents glass project call for participation

Open-Contents is a project by Toronto based glass artist Brad Turner…. As an installation of 26 hand made bottles, collectively representing the letters on a keyboard, participants are encouraged to submit their own message, via website, to the character of their choosing. For every electronic submission, the message will be printed and kept within the corresponding bottle…. Reflecting the nature of online participation, these gestures are recorded and archived, while only a few will be discovered.

Easy to Make Loop Necklace

I can’t decide if this is really 80s or really awesome. Maybe it’s both. Either way, it’s easy, too! Bunch of beads, bunch of string, and a big round doohickey. Simple as pie.
