I was going to suggest books too. Even when I get a book I`m not entirely thrilled about, I can always find an idea, a colour combination or a pattern I like. That also goes for knitting magazines (which often are too expensive to buy just to have a peak, even though I would love to…)

I didn’t see this, but I like notebooks, especially ones with graph paper. Chapters/Amazon gift certificates, since Knitpicks doesn’t always have all the knitting books you might want…

These might possibly fit into your “notions” category, but…row counters, blocking wires and pins, magnetic chart holders/place markers (or even the sticky reusable/disposable ones…totes/holders for projects and needles/hooks…knitting needle gauges…all notions, basically.
