Another vote for plastic here. I was nearly tempted to buy a lovely wooden swift and winder, but went with the plastic for $$ reasons. You'll find that the plastic winder is nearly indestructible.

Congrats, you'll love it. I have a plastic one and no problems with it aside from the gears underneath occasionally eating the yarn if I'm not careful.

My ball winder and swift were two of the best knitting-related purchases I ever made. I thought at first that it wasn't worth it, but no longer do I feel that draining fatigue at the thought of winding an entire skein of laceweight or sock yarn by hand. (Or Cascade Eco Wool. I wound two 437-yard skeins of this by hand before I bought my ball winder, and I think it took me more than an hour apiece...)

I have the same ball winder, and I love it. It has wound yards and yards of yarn, and it is still as good as new.
