Dave Cole’s Knitting Machine

Dave Cole's Knitting Machine

The Knitting Machine is just one of artist Dave Cole’s large scale projects that consist of ambitiously knitting unconventional materials. In this particular piece Cole uses two excavation tractors equipped with 20-foot knitting needles to assemble a giant American flag in time for the 4th of July (2005). This work was part of larger exhibition and artist residence held at Mass Moca, North Adams, Mass. Cole describes the work as “combining the feminized domestic American tradition of knitting with the grandiose gesture of construction”.

Yeah yeah, more gender-commentary stuff I know, but dudes, they’re 20-foot knitting needles! Powered by giant crane things! If men knitted more, I’m fairly sure they would make electric knitting needles, and they would be highly dangerous and cause all sorts of accidents but men would buy them anyway because it’s faster. There would be a special section for knitting power tools in Canadian Tire. (Or wherever you buy power tools in the states. Walmart? I assume Americans buy all their things at Walmart.)

BTW, the knitting needles weren’t the only things up there when it was actually knit. A quick look at this picture indicates they did it English style, with a man in a cherry picker throwing the yarn. Sorta.

Knitting Christmas Kangaroos

Holiday Kangaroos are knitting at Google! It looks like they’re trying to develop a whole series with these guys. I heartily approve of story lines involving cute things, so this gets my official fluffy white baby seal of approval.

Eve’s secrets to a great life #47: hiding your hot sauce

Hiding your Hot SauceHoo boy! That last post was a downer. I didn’t want that one to be up for so long, considering that I was no longer feeling all that rotten after about 5 minutes of maxin’ and relaxin’. It was all, Quelle dommage! to Allons’y acheter quelques prostituées!

Speaking of les prostituées, PingMag recently published a short piece entitled The Strange World of Women’s Private Time. It’s actually quite interesting, and maybe a bit inspiring (at least in terms of the cute clothes). But if you don’t want to open that page because you think Betty in IT is watching your internet habits, you can go check out this hilarious crocheted “hot sauce” holder instead. It’s for holding your… ahem. Hot sauce. It looks like a mouse who had an anvil dropped on his head, and now he has a lump of Loony Tunes proportions. Seeing as it’s just two tubes, a sash and a bit of frill (now doesn’t that sound like a movie you’d keep behind the counter), it’s easily replicable in knitted form. I’m sure you can increase or decrease the length of the lump to accomodate a different size… hot sauce bottle. And if you’re needing to increase the girth (because you have a very thick… er… hot sauce bottle), just knit at a larger gauge.

Now remember, this is for hot sauce only. Don’t you girls get any ideas. It’s for HOT. SAUCE.

Feeling Sheepish?

Cute Sheep

Here’s a cute picture of a baby sheep to make up for my lack of WIP posting. The beau took a picture of me knittin’ on my jaywalkers, but I haven’t gotten it from him yet. I’m also working on a secret lace project that I may soon divulge. The suspense!

In addition: I give you a story about a woman with two vaginas. Oh, you’re pretending you don’t want to read it but really, everyone wants to read about a woman with two vaginas. Come on, she can have two orgasms! That is crazy.

Idle Hands

Lazy Lounger

Lazy cow (ironic, considering her name) has recently mused about the fact that women seem to feel more guilty about being lackadaisical than men do.

I think most men are born with the indolent gene. Mr LC and my son have naps whenever they lie down during the day. How many women admit to that, without feeling terribly guilty? Every mother blogger – at one time or another – has written a long list of all the tasks they’ve completed that day. (I’ve done it too). I can think of only one blogger who has written about the joys of doing nothing on a regular basis. Please correct me if I’m wrong -)

Unfortunately I can’t. I’m the same way; I have to be doing something all the time, which is one of the reasons I took up knitting. I feel guilty when I’m sitting in front of the television or watching a movie without having something to do. TV time is programming time; movie time is knitting time. Idle hands and minds are the devil’s playground, after all.

I was talking to my boss a few weeks ago about something I was working on at home, and he turned to me and asked, “do you ever not do anything?” The answer was a quick no. I feel uncomfortable if I’m just sitting around. My laziest days are my guiltiest days. Of course, what I consider productive are things like reading blogs and playing with genetic algorithms. I most certainly used the genetic algorithms to avoid putting together a desk today. But my program is almost finished! Maybe tomorrow I can show it off. It has knitting applications!

In case you haven’t discovered it yet, you should listen to April’s podcast, Knit2BTied. Her next-to-last episode included a reading of The One Spinner, episodes 1 and 2. I listened to it ages ago and it was so great but then I was stolen away from the internet and just now I realized that I never thanked her or plugged her podcast or anything until now. I feel so bad.

So go off and listen to The One Spinner in STEREO! April, you did a fantastic job. Better than I could ever have hoped. Thanxxx with three X-es! No, four!
