Here’s a cool set of yarn labels from vintage yarn thifting. I love things like this!

Two Great Posts from the Knitosphere

At January One there’s a great story about men and knitting. And thanks to Fig and Plum, I have an AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS-sounding sweet potato breakfast recipe to try.

I got made

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

My knitted soccer ball was posted on the MAKE: blog! This is fairly exciting. To those who are visiting via MAKE: welcome! Take a look around while I rustle up some tea. I wasn’t expecting company! I’m not sure if I have crackers in the pantry, but I’ll go check. Do you like cheese? This house is a mess!

Name Drop

I’m listening to the Pixie Purls podcast right now. I’m not really the hugest fan of knitting podcasts because a lot of people sound like they’re currently having THE MOST BORING DAY OF THEIR LIVES, but I really love listening to this girl. It’s like a good friend of mine left me a really long answering machine message. The iTunes store is slow right now, but as soon as it speeds up I’m going to download more and knit while I listen.

Live and let Dye

I came across a really neat dyeing process at Fiber Fool. Wrap it into a ball, stick it in dye (specifically Wilton’s icing dye, as it breaks up into cool colours) and let it soak. The yarn on the outside gets dyed more than the inside (because it takes a while to creep in), creating a speckled gradient. The yarn in question was used to knit a pair of Swamp socks.

I think I’m going to try dying my own yarn at some point this summer. Back in first year I would never have imagined that at some point I would be knitting lace and dyeing yarn. But anything’s possible through the wonder of internet tutorials:

There’s also a great article at The Daily Knitter about hand exercises. I sure could have used those a week ago when I was crocheting. My hands are still aching.

Softies at I am 8-bit

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

You can count on me to bring you all the latest news in cute things.

Tavis tipped me off to I am 8-bit, pictures of which you can see at FORT 90. There are some really cute sewn pieces in there that allows all those with too much estrogen to enjoy it as well.

Side note: For those who poo-poo estrogen, the “yoke” is on you, boys (and/or girls). Boy brains are masculine because of estradiol. Estrogen can’t cross the body-to-brain security fence but testosterone can, so it gets metabolized in the brain and makes you like trucks instead of Barbies. And now you know.

Girlie Post

I dyed my hair yesterday! For once, it’s pretty close to the actual colour of my hair (dirty blonde, the most banal of hair colours) with a medium brown. I believe the name is Mocha Orgasm or something. I’m not going to take a picture now because I’m too lazy to change out of my pyjamas, but maybe soon.

I also bought a fancy coat and red shoes! I love red shoes. Also, I got a haircut. No wonder I’m behind on exam studying. I’ve gotten through two of 6 chapters in my Perception textbook, which is right on target, but I’m behind with Brain & Behaviour. Hopefully I’ll catch up by the end of the night, if I don’t spend too much time this afternoon at Value Village buying sweaters which I will harvest for beautiful yarn and maybe making this or this or this or this or maybe the ever-popular Ingeborg.

Lastly, here’s a cute story by a blogger who labels her blog as being about both knitting and brain theory, but I haven’t seen much brain theory. Sigh. Aw.

DIY Light Tent

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

I found a whole bunch of tutorials for building a light tent. I’m not sure when I’m going to get around to making one, especially since I prolly wouldn’t be able to fit anything but the smallest box in the new room I’m moving into. Here are some of the better links:

I may do something like this, or I may just take a little kid’s table and gut it. I’m sure I could find a white sheet at a garage sale for negative two dollars. Fortunately, I have at least 3 halogen lights so I’d pretty much be set.

I want to write a story about Old Mother Hubbard and her lesser-known relation to the inventor of scientology. Also, she dies of a meth overdose. It was her first time though, it’s not like she was an addict or anything.
