Plugin Preview

I’m so excited. I sent my WordPress plugin off to my beta testers yesterday, and I’m already getting feedback! I love how it turned out. There are still a few problems in the interface that I’d like to straighten out, but in general it’s a-okay.

I’ve implemented the plugin on my own blog, and you can see the dynamically updated progress bars now on my sidebar. Yes, there are quite a lot of 0%s, but (with the help of the little planning calendar I scripted yesterday) I’m only slated to work on four of them at a time and most of them are to be started at least a month from now. Maybe I should add a script that displays only progress bars presently being worked on, instead of displaying every unfinished project in the database. Something to think about.

I’m always willing to take on extra beta testers, so if you’d like to beta test, send me an email!

Yarnival is ready for publication! I’m about to put it up but I wanted to mention one thing first that needs doing:

Over the weekend I was without the internet, so I had plenty of time to work on the WordPress plugin for my Work In Progress Bars. If you have a WordPress blog and you want to get this before everyone else does, drop me a line and you can be one of my beta testers! All you need is a WordPress blog and an adventurous spirit. It’s past the alpha stage, which means I’m fairly sure it has no chance of breaking your blog. All that needs to be sorted out is the interaction design (whether it’s easy to use) and compatibility (whether it works for different versions of WordPress and servers). So drop me a line! Radical!

UPDATE: there is a new WordPress plugin available that allows you to manage your projects and displays these progress bars in your sidebar.

8% Progress 32% Progress 65% Progress 100% Progress

All of the responses that I’ve gotten on my progress bars have been from blogspot bloggers, so for now I’ll be putting off making a WordPress plugin out of it and simply offering it as a bit of php code. If you don’t have a place to host the php file, you can get free hosting from Ning, which you may recognize as the site that hosts Cute Overload‘s voting system. (If you come across a cute little caramel bunny, vote for it above all others! It’s one of my submissions. Represent.)

Download the Progress Bars!

To use the bars:

  1. Download and unzip the progress.zip file.
  2. Upload the “progress” folder to wherever you’ll be hosting it.
  3. To display the image, use the following code:
    <img title="25% Progress" src="your_host.com/progress/progress.php?percent=25" />
Replace the 25 with whichever number you wish and replace your_host.com with your host path.
  4. If you have any questions, just ask! I’d be delighted to help.

If you want to provide a link to this post below your bars so other folks can use them as well, I’d appreciate it. Just copy and paste this code:

My First Knitting Blog Tool: Work In Progress Bars

8% Progress 32% Progress 65% Progress 100% Progress

I’ve seen lots of progress bars on various knitting blogs, and I’ve always really wanted one. I didn’t really like any of the ones I found on the net, so I decided to make my own. They’re dynamically-generated [[PNG]] files. I’ve never used [[PHP]] to generate images before, so it was really cool to learn how to do it. I introduced a neat little colour scale, too; it goes from purple to green to orange to pink! * Girl power! *

I’m planning on offering this as a WordPress plugin to any other knitters who want to include it on their blog. There’ll be a Dashboard interface where you can input your WIPs and edit their percentage finished, and maybe some other features once I think about it more.

If you’d like to have this on your blog, leave me a comment or send me an email and I’ll hack something together quickly. The more responses I get, the bigger the push will be to get this plugin finished!
